Being the oldest engineering discipline in
vogue, Civil Engineering is the father of all engineering disciplines. With
such a distinguished history behind it and centuries of accumulated
knowledge and skills, the department was established from the very beginning
of the Institute in 1986 and is offering Undergraduate (BE) in Civil
Engineering. Looking into the demand in the society, the intake has been
increased two-fold with the current intake capacity to 60. The department
has been modernized to cope up with the dramatic changes brought about by
the digital revolution. Teaching emphasis has been laid on including the
basic aspects of all facets of the discipline, namely, construction
materials, structural analysis, structural design in steel and concrete,
water resources engineering, transportation engineering, environmental
engineering, surveying and geotechnical engineering, GIS & Remote Sensing.
At the same time, in recognition of the importance of computer applications,
courses like structural analysis in particular, have been framed in such a
manner as to encourage the students to exploit the potential of computers
for solving engineering problems. The department is proud of its faculty
members with maximum number of PhD holders. Faculty members with huge
industrial experience also have been included to promote R&D and consultancy
activities. The department has been recognized as a consultancy center for
Road Construction, Traffic Census, Building material testing, and Structural
design etc. by the leading Private Sector as well as Government
organizations. The department has well equipped laboratories
especially to mention are
Fluid Mechanics, Concrete Lab, Geotech Lab, Survey Lab, Public Health
Engineering Lab, Transportation Engineering, Structure Lab etc. with latest
software like AUOTOCAD, STADD III, STAD PRO, ATENA etc. A well-furnished and
well-stacked departmental library provides all sorts of bookish support to
the students and faculty members of the department. The department has its
own computer center, which is linked to the BIT-LAN.
The department is proud to
announce that the only Post graduate course (ME – Full Time) in Structural
Engineering in the state is being offered by the department with an intake
capacity of 18.
The department has been
accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA). The department has been
recognized as the Research Center by the University for offering PhD program
in Civil Engineering.
The alumni of this
department are well placed in leading companies both in India and Abroad
such as INFOSYS, TCS, SATYAM, MECON, SAIL, SAHARA, SHELL etc.
